ALL ABOARD
The announcement call given by the
conductor before leaving the station
BOX CAR
An enclosed rail car used to transport
many different types of goods
CABOOSE
A special freight car attached to the
end of a train providing an office for the crew
COMBINE CAR
A divided passenger car used for
transporting people and baggage
DEPOT
A small building used for passenger
or freight service
ENGINEER
A railroad employee, who operates
any type of locomotive
GAGE
The distance between two rails on
a section of track
HANDCAR
A manually three or four-wheeled
rail cart used for track work
PRIVATE CAR
A privately owned railroad passenger
car with an elaborate interior
SPIKE
A long steel nail used to secure
rails into place
STEAM ENGINE
An engine driven and piston system
producing steam
STREETCAR
An electric rail car traveling along
city streets
TELEGRAPH
A pole and wire communication system
used to contact people between stations
TRACK
A term used for rails, spikes, and railroad
ties to form one completed section
TRAIN
A connected line of railroad cars
and an engine
TUNNEL
A narrow covered passageway through
selected hills and mountains
WATER TOWER
A wood cylinder shaped reservoir used
for supplying water to steam engines
